I'm wondering if anyone reading this has any impressions of Depeche Mode's Sounds of the Universe. I've heard it through once, but only a few songs jumped out at me, which isn't all that great. Then again, Exciter had to grow on me. What do you think?

I was tempted to go see Depeche Mode at Jones Beach this Saturday, but the good seats are $60-85 while the crap seats are $35. If I see a band live, I want to be close to the stage. There's no point for me otherwise. I'm not paying $60-85 (no doubt this figure is before TicketMaster puts charges on them too) for a concert.

It bothers me that a lot of songs i loved in the 80s don't sound like on modern players. They sound tinny and incomplete. You don't get all the levels you used to get. The absence of bass sounds odd.

Applying logic, I found and bought the Linkin Park album that has the version of "My December" that I wanted. It is "My{Dsmbr" on Reanimation, not "My December" on the import single, though I'd like to check that out too sometime. I've figured out that there's more to my instant liking of Linkin Park's "My December" than just liking. It's that "My December" might as well be an '80s vintage Depeche Mode song. It even has some of the sounds, and its production replicates the crisp, crystalline, bass-less quality of that era, though optimized to work with contemporary players ( Read more... )
